Weekly Online Art Workshops

Educate yourself in Art!  Participate in a weekly online art workshop to discover and develop your own ways of artistic expression and to become an inspired artist!

The IRIS ART CENTRE organises weekly online art workshops for adults who wish to discover and develop their artistic expression.

These webinars are focused, methodical sessions that consist of a theoretical part: a lecture with PowerPoint presentation, and a practical part where you work by yourself at home. The first half hour is spent showing slides of the work of established artists that have been chosen to inspire you for the specific lesson, along with an analysis of themes and techniques present in the work of these artists. Next, you will work on your own, inspired by the the slides and the theme of the webinar, to discover your own way of expression. In these weekly webinars there is time for questions, and optional "show and tell" at the end to share your process.

For more information about the workshops, please send an email to irisartcentre@gmail.com.

How do artists work out big ideas?

A workshop that will introduce you to the work of well known artists of the 20th and 21st century, by looking at common big ideas they worked on. Every session will tackle a new "big idea". We will first look at a Power Point Presentation, with a choice of the work of three modern/contemporary artists in each session, and analyze their artistic thinking process and their final artwork. Next, you will research your own imagery, medium and presentation related to the big idea of the week. A very useful workshop if you want to explore new artistic paths in your creative expression. The session ends with a group discussion.

This is a 10 sessions workshop (from Jan. 11 to March 15th) where you will learn a lot about the history of modern art by getting to know the work of different artists working in a great array of media.

Every week we will look at the work of three modern/contemporary artists, and trace where they found their inspiration and how they worked it out in their artwork. It is very interesting to look at three artists every time, to see how different they are, and how original and authentic there individual artistic expressions are. We will look at 10 "Big Ideas" in art. The focus will be on learning the steps of how to transform an idea into a work of art. Except for hugely inspiring you for your own art-making process, his workshop will also help you to understand the theoretical basis of conceptual and postmodern art as we will dive into the narratives and artistic rationale of the artists.

The painting that features this event is by Miriam Shapiro (1923 - 2015). We will look at her work when we focus on Femininity (18/1). Shapiro’s work touches on the issue of feminism and art: especially in the aspect of feminism in relation to abstract art. This work represents Schapiro’s identity as an artist working in the center of contemporary abstraction and simultaneously as a feminist being challenged to represent women’s "consciousness" through imagery. The other artists we will look at in the session on Femininity are Judy Chicago and Hannah Wilke.

Where do great women artists find inspiration?

A mixed media workshop to develop personal artistic voice featuring the work of ten women artists. We will focus on where these great women artists found inspiration and how they transformed it into a personal work of art, and this will inspire you to make your own artistic creations!

Each week we will start with a 20 minute presentation with slide show centering on the work of a well known woman artist in order to trace ideas and inspiration that led the artist to produce her work.

We will analyze their personal visual language and see how their beliefs, life philosophy and self-identity are interwoven with their art. It will inspire you to grow in your own artistic work. You will discover how working with those feelings, ideas and sensations that are most meaningful to you are crucial in developing your personal artistic voice.

In the next half hour, you will find your own clues, sensitivities and ways in approaching a personal issue of your choice and work that out in collage or mixed media. Then there will be time for "show and tell", if you want so you can share your work and work-process with the other participants. This is a very useful workshop if you want to explore new artistic paths in your creative expression. This workshop will also help you to understand the theoretical basis of conceptual and postmodern art as we will dive into the narratives and artistic rationale of the artists. The focus will be on learning the steps of how to transform a personal idea into a work of art.

Learn to tap into your personal narrative and to visually express what is meaningful to you!

What do you have to say as an artist, what is your message, how can you find it, and express it artistically? This is an intensive workshop in which you will learn how to find your narrative, how to visualize it, where to find inspiration inside and what the tools are that foster inspired art-making. In this workshop you will learn how to develop your artistic voice: your very personal visual language. This workshop is based on my book "From Art to Empowerment: How Women Can Develop Artistic Voice".

During this workshop you will find a personal issue, and explore the metaphors, memories, feelings and colors you need to visualize this issue in your art. How to Develop Artistic Voice uses a working method, inspired by holistic art education, that will assist you in the process of visualizing your inner world. It is called  Activating the Inner World:  by diving inside yourself, the world of reflection, imagination, emotion and intuition, you will find that specific word, image, feeling, memory or dream that is your unique experience, and proves pivotal in creating your personal unique art.  You will learn the tools that are most helpful on your artistic journey: self-reflective thinking, visualization and journaling. This workshop will help you years from now to continue and explore your personal artistic trail. You will work in  collage, painting and mixed media as mediums for your art-making process. How to Develop Artistic Voice will inspire your artistic ability and expand your personal development as an artist. You will discover the riches of your own life experiences as sources of inspired art-making.

Together with your artistic mentor Annette Luycx you will work on the exploration of your artistic cosmos, develop your artistic abilities, focus on a specific issue you feel passionate about, and find new trails in your artistic expression. After the weekly lecture and assignment, you will have the whole week to work on your project. Every week there will be time for Q & A to clarify any queries you might have and support your process.

On completion of this workshop you will have learned how to

- visualize thinking processes

- surf on the “inner net”

- use new creative strategies to boost your artistic process

- find what “works” for you

Each session starts with a  lecture & slides, providing participants with artistic and practical information, followed by a guided imagery exercise to activate the imagination,  a demonstration if needed, and a Q & A to clarify any queries you might have.  Next, you will have time to make a start on the assignment of the week, and present your idea. You will have the rest of the week to finish the assignment, which you can show the week after if you like.

Session 1   Images Behind Words: Accessing the Imagination

Sat. February 6, 2021    12:00 PM - 2:00 PM EDT

Art is a visual language. The discovery of your own style in art involves learning this visual language to give expression to your identity, your feelings, and your beliefs about life in images. But how do you learn to speak it? Where do we find images? These are stored in our imagination!  You can access the library of your imagination through language (words). In this session you will find an issue of personal interest to work on during the workshop. I will give you the tools to find those ideas and images that are most meaningful to you and that will be pivotal in developing your personal artistic voice.

Session 2   The Meaning of Images: Finding Personal Metaphors

Sat. February 13, 2021    12:00 PM - 2:00 PM EDT

The soul of art is its metaphoric, symbolic dimension. This was very strong in medieval art, the dove symbolizing the Holy Spirit for instance, the lamb was Christ, and light was a metaphor for truth. Images function like symbols to communicate meaning visually. Analyzing how multiple metaphors relate to each other brings about many details about how a certain word or idea is deeply experienced by the person who uses it. In this session you will learn how to find your own personal metaphors in relation to the issue you are working on, and explore these images in a new artwork.

Session 3    Memories: Your Deepest Source of Inspiration

Sat. February 20, 2021   12:00 PM - 2:00 PM EDT

Memories are like a treasury for the artist. Memories are part of our inner world, they are our personal history and they are part of the collective history of the country and culture we belong to. We will look at artwork of some contemporary artists and see that remembering always follows feeling. You will learn how to get access to our memories using the senses and also experience how you  can “zoom in” on a scene from the past and remember details. You will see how details of memories can give you incredible inspiration!

Session 4   Feelings: The Compass to What is Meaningful

Sat. February 27, 2021   12:00 PM - 2:00 PM EDT

In this session we will research images behind feelings. Feelings are a very important part of art making. They give a special dimension to our imagination, and guide us to unimaginable inspiration. They are our compass to what is truly meaningful. Feelings also also lead the way to finding the right colors! In this session you will learn how feelings and colors work together and how you can use them as a key to get to the core of your art-making process. We will look closer at the character of feelings (it a soft, sweet feeling, or a strong, intense feeling) to find related images and colors.
